The Salkantay Trail to Machu Picchu is a wonderful trek between some of the highest mountains of South America, taking you up mountain passes, with Andean peaks towering all around, and down long valleys of tiny villages. You arrive below the ruins of Machu Picchu. The Inca Capital of Cusco and the Sacred Valley are perfect places to whet your appetite while acclimatising to the altitude pre-trek.
This 3-night trek is a wonderful itinerary on its own, although often used as the back-up option for the busieer Inca Trail when the limited spaces on the more popular trek are full. It includes all the necessary equipment so that you can concentrate on the high-altitude hiking: tents; sleeping bags; inflatable sleeping mats; pillow; porters for personal gear; all cooking equipment; dining and kitchen tents; water; first-aid kit and more.
The Salkantay Trail takes you up the valley below the enormous mountain and then down through remote Peruvian communities, with stunning mountain scenery at every step of the hike. Your guide and porters will help make the trail easier and more entertaining for you, with much to learn about Peru and the Inca people along the way. The days are spent hiking under clear blue Andean skies, while the cold mountain nights are lit up with glorious starlight.
