Sao Luis is the state capital of Maranhao and the arrival point for visits to the Lençois Maranhenses National Park, a remote and beautiful coastal land, with dunes, lagoons and stunning natural scenery. The white sands and blue lagoons make it the only desert in the world with its own lakes. There are 4x4 trips into the dunes, flights over them, and boat trips down the Lazy River to the ocean, where the village of Cabure sits on a sand spit that is slowly disappearing. The shifting sands of Maranhao are one of Brazil's special places.
