Hiking Tours of Brazil

Our Hiking Tours of Brazil are all basic ideas that can be tailor-made to match your requirements. Any tour can include one or more destinations, and can be purely dedicated to hiking, although some mountains may include a little climbing that is still suitable for those without much experience. We can also arrange serious climbing trips. We can also mix them with other activities such as climbing, kayaking or tandem hang-gliding flights, some regular tourism, and some nightlife. We include all that you need during your trip, the accommodation with breakfast; all airport transfers and other road journeys; any activities and excursions with English-speaking guides and relevant entrance fees; plus some popular extras. For our Hiking Tours of Brazil, you only need to bring your favourite hiking boots and regular outdoor clothing and equipment. Any parts where a little climbing is necessary will include ropes, helmets and safety harnesses. All hikes and climbs are undertaken with an experienced, qualified local guide, with activity insurance included.

This is a short but sweet trek in the mountains of the Serra dos Orgaos National Park an hour or two outside of Rio de Janeiro. The trek over covers the shoulders of five peaks in Brazil's oldest park and the steep canyons in between them. The crowning glory is the sunrise from the top of Pedra do Sino, the highest peak in the park. Days either side in Rio de Janeiro bring more hiking possibilities.

Itinerary

Day 1
Arrive in Rio for the Petropolis-Teresopolis Trek

Destination: Rio de Janeiro

On arrival for the Petropolis-Teresopolis Trek, you first transfer to your Rio hotel. Afternoon brings the chance to practice with a little hiking of Sugar Loaf Mountain. Instead of taking the easy way up by cable car, you circle Urca & Sugar Loaf along a 2hr trail above the Atlantic Ocean. The final section is a short climb of 25m up the granite and can be done by beginners of reasonable fitness. Enjoying the sunset views from Sugar Loaf having just climbed it is the most satisfying way to visit one of Rio's postcard places. Evening brings a pre-trek briefing and the chance to organise the details for meals and camping equipment for the next three days.
Day 2
The Petropolis to Teresopolis Trek

Destination: Rio de Janeiro to Petropolis & Castelos do Açu

After leaving Rio, the drive up to Petropolis takes you to the gate of the Serra dos Orgaos National Park, the first one of its kind in Brazil. After registering in the park, you begin the Petropolis to Teresopolis Trek, the crossing between the two imperial cities of Rio. The first day involves a 7km hike up through Atlantic Rainforest to the high peaks, with waterfalls such as Veu da Noiva to visit along the way. Spectacular tropical scenery appears at various viewpoints before the vegetation thins out to provide views down the valley, and over to Rio from the top of the Açu mountain at 2,216m. The refuge is home for the night after around 5hrs of hiking.
Day 3
Serra dos Orgaos National Park

Destination: Castelos do Açu to Pedra do Sino

Only 11km covers the shoulders of five peaks in the Serra dos Orgaos National Park, but what a day's hiking! The scenery on clear days is spectacular, beginning with sunrise from the rocks of Castelos do Açu. The trail is through short vegetation and across many rocks, guided by cairns. The spine of mountains sloping down to the iconic Dedo de Deus is visible from the tops, while the Elevador and the Cavalinho bring spectacular steep ascents from the 300m deep canyons. After arriving at the Sino refuge, you can head to the 2,263m peak for sunset. A cold mountain night awaits, with clouds regularly covering the slopes.
Day 4
Hiking down the Serra dos Orgaos

Destination: Pedra do Sino to Teresopolis & Rio

The highlight of the Petropolis-Teresopolis Trek is sunrise from the top of Pedra do Sino. This unmissable sight is one of the finest places to see sunrise in the whole of Brazil. Panoramic views include the climbers' paradise of Agulha do Diabo and Dedo de Deus, plus neighbouring Tres Picos Park. The highest mountains in Rio State are also visible in the Serra do Mantiqueira, with Guanabara Bay and the peaks surrounding Teresopolis below. After breakfast, a 3hr descent through Atlantic Rainforest takes you to the park headquarters where the drive back to Rio begins. After arriving at your hotel mid-afternoon, you can relax for the afternoon.
Day 5
Final Look at Rio

Destination: Rio de Janeiro & Away

Your final day can be filled with more Rio hikes such as Dois Irmaos overlooking Ipanema, or the tandem hang-gliding flight. Trips to Christ the Redeemer can also be included. The Petropolis-Teresopolis Trek is short and spectacular, and can even be done in just one night at a push, although you miss out on the sunrise from Pedra do Sino! A shorter hike from Teresopolis to Sino is probably the better one-night idea. This little trek can of course be incorporated into any other tours for Rio, the Costa Verde and Brazil. Booking early is recommended as park visitor numbers are limited as are the refuge tents. Late booking means more equipment to carry!
