Itinerary

Day 1
Arrive in Brasilia

Destination:

You arrive in Brasilia, the purpose-built capital of Brazil, after flying over the Mid-West high plains. From the air you can pick out the aeroplane shape of the city, designed by Oscar Niemeyer. After transferring to your hotel, you will be taken on an afternoon tour of the city, visiting the concrete and glass constructions. Perhaps the most impressive is the Metropolitan Cathedral, with its fabulous stained-glass windows. The Santuario Dom Bosco also uses arches and glass to impressive effect. The Congress building and the Palacio do Planalto are essential sights, which can be seen from above by helicopter flight or from the tall Television Tower.
Day 2
Into the Cerrado

Destination:

After breakfast in Brasilia, you head into the interior. Goias State is the high plains, located in the middle of Brazil. The ecosystem of this type of tropical savannah is home to a vast variety of plants and animals, many of them endemic to the Brazilian bushlands known as the Cerrado. After three hours, you stop for lunch in Alto Paraiso, the gateway to the Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park. An afternoon outing takes you to the Vale da Lua, where rocks sculpted by the Rio São Miguel form a valley landscape reminiscent of the moon. Continuing to Sao Jorge on the edges of the park, you check in before a wonderful cerrado sunset.
Day 3
Falls & Hot Springs

Destination:

After breakfast in, you head into the Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park for a hike of around 8km amongst the high altitude cerrado vegetation. The trail was originally used by miners to access the quartz crystal mines in the area, which led to the founding of Sao Jorge. The Pedreiras Waterfall is just one of many falls cascading down the Rio Preto, with the chance for a swim in the natural pools and a hydro-massage from the falls. After a picnic lunch you return along a small path shimmering with fragments of quartz crystal. The day finishes with a visit to the relaxing hot springs at nearby Agua Quente before you return to Sao Jorge.
Day 4
Rio Sao Miguel

Destination:

The Rio Sao Miguel borders the Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park with two of the main attractions. From the Raizama Conservation Reserve, a 3km circular trail takes in views of the 40m Raizama Canyon, with its forested banks. The Morada do Sol Trail alongside the river is a 3.5km hike through canyons and cascades. Lunch is a picnic on the banks of the river besides one of many natural swimming pools of crystal clear water. There is the chance to spot cerrado wildlife too, with maned wolves, anteaters and armadillo amongst the park residents. After finishing the hike, the afternoon ends with the 45min road journey to Alto Paraiso.
Day 5
Sao Bento & Almecegas Waterfalls

Destination:

An 8km hike takes you to Portal da Chapada, through forests and typical cerrado landscapes. A stop for a swim beneath the Sao Bento Waterfall comes before another trail of 2.5km takes you to Almecegas Falls, the first with a 50m drop, the second with a large natural swimming pool. Three adventure activities are available, with a Canopy Adventure high up in the trees; an option for abseiling 45m down the Almecegas Falls into the pool - the descent is done with expert instructors; The Flight of the Hawk zipline is an 850m descent above the canopy with fantastic views of the cerrado and the hills of Chapada dos Veadeiros.
Day 6
Flying Away from Brasilia

Destination:

In the morning you can enjoy breakfast in Alto Paraiso amongst the cerrado birdlife and then a wander around the small town, famous for its crystals and with a slightly hippy atmosphere. After lunch, you begin the road journey back to Brasilia, connecting in the capital with your flight away. This tour of Brasilia and the Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park can also be shortened by a night or two, or extended to the mountain towns of Goias, such as Pirenopolis, Cidade de Goias and the hot springs of Caldas Novas. You can also combine it with other destinations such as the Pantanal and the Chapada dos Guimaraes National Park.
