Atins Kite-Surfing Tour Travel

Atins Kite-Surfing Tour

4 Nights Minimum Recommended

Your Kite-Surfing Tour of Atins on the edge of the Lençois Maranhenses National Park in North-East of Brazil begins on arrival in Sao Luis, the state capital of Maranhao. You travel into remote and beautiful coastal lands, with dunes, lagoons and stunning natural scenery, with days of sun and strong winds to kite-surf to your heart's content, on the Atlantic Ocean waves, the Lazy River and even on lagoons of the park.

Atins is an ideal kite-surfing location for both beginners and those with plenty of experience, with ocean, river and lagoon options, including on some of the park lagoons, with the rising white-sand dunes all around, one of the most scenic kite-surfing spots on earth. The remote location of the village make it one of the quieter places along the coastline for top-class action. If you want the best conditions but without the hordes of people who usually find them, then Atins could be the perfect place.

Tours of any length can be arranged, with kite-surf equipment and classes available too from local experts. Away from the kite-surfing then Atins is a quiet, remote village, with the park behind and the ocean in front, with the Rio Preguiças, the Lazy River, passing slowly down the side. The pace of life here away from the kite-surfing is as tranquil as the river...

Combines With: Trips to other classic Kite-Surfing spots of North-East Brazil such as Cumbuco and Jericoacoara, with a Downwinder possibly between some or all of them!

Best Time to Visit: The best winds are usually from May to February, with June still being the end of the wet season, so June or July to January are usually considered the best times for kite-surfing in the ocean. The Lençois Maranhenses lagoons usually only have plenty of water during the wet season and for a few months after, so if you want to kite-surf in those, then June to August is recommended.

Itinerary

Day 1
All the Way to Maranhao!

Destination: Sao Luis to Barreirinhas & Atins

On arrival in Sao Luis, the state capital of Maranhao in the north-east of Brazil, you will be welcomed at the airport and transferred through the rugged and remote interior of the coast to Barreirinhas. The 3hr journey on the modern highway gives you a chance to appreciate the flora and fauna of this region, plus the climate so close to the equator on the north-facing coastline. On arrival in Barreirinhas, you continue onwards by boat down the Rio Preguiças, the Lazy River, to Atins which sits at the mouth, with the dunes of the Lençois Maranhenses National Park looking behind it. Depending on your flight arrivel time, you may even need an overnight in Barreirinhas, continuing next morning to Atins.
Day 2
Kite-Surfing in Atins

Destination: Atins

The strong cross onshore winds that pass along the north coast of Brazil from around May to February make it some of the finest kite-surfing territory on earth. The winds reach as far as Atins, and their strength can be seen easily with the enormous dunes created behind in the huge expanse of the Lençois Maranhenses National Park. Atins is still reasonably remote and wonderfully undiscovered in terms of kite-surfing popularity, so you can enjoy your days with tranquil waters and few other kites in the sky, even in peak period. The village of Atins is very simple and quiet too, the perfect spot to spend your tropical time relaxing while not out with your kites.
Day 3
Lençois Maranhenses Kite-Surfing

Destination: Atins

There are various options for kite-surfing which make Atins an excellent choice. The Atlantic Ocean out front of the village is protected by a breakwater, so there are flat waters closer to the shore, and larger ones further out for those who want a little air. There is also the Lazy River which meets the sea at Atins, and the shallowness of the Preguiças makes it ideal for beginners too. Then of course there is the special reason for making it all this way! The lagoons of the Lençois Maranhenses National Park of course! The best ones for kite-surfing vary in different conditions, but with a little local knowledge in the right season then you can enjoy some of the most scenic kite-surfing on earth!
Day 4
Kite-Surf Equipment & Classes

Destination: Atins

The consistent strong winds in the kiting season make smaller kites sensible if you bring your own, 6-7.5m are usually recommended. If you prefer to travel lighter then a little information on experience and build provided in advance means that we can kit you out perfectly. Tutoring from 1-2 hours per day is available from your local experts, and this is useful for everyone from beginners to experts. Kite-surf classes can be arranged for people of all ages and abilities, with Atins being especially good for those who have never touched a kite-surf before. Large, open, empty sands, and flat waters make it the perfect spot to learn how to control a kite, and then a kite and board together!
Day 5
Atins Options

Destination: Atins

As well as the kite-surfing, you may like to add a little variety to your stay in Atins. As well as plenty of opportunity to relax, you could also consider other activities. The park dunes are good for horse-riding trips, sand-hiking, while quadbike trips can be arranged for the smaller dunes across the river. The Rio Preguiças is also good for a boat trip, especially around sunset, with visits to the Mandacaru lighthouse and the village of Vassouras with its friendly monkeys. You can also paddle around the river and creeks by kayak or stand-up paddle boards. All of these can be included or you can wait until you arrive in Atins and see if anything can drag you away from your kite and board!
Day 6
Flying Away from Maranhao!

Destination: Atins to Barreirinhas & Sao Luis

Your stay in Atins comes to an end with the 90min boat ride back to Barreirinhas and the 3hr road journey to Sao Luis. You can spend as much time as required in the village, and we can also include Atins as only one of a few fabulous kite-surfing stops along the coast, along with Cumbuco and Jericoacoara. It can also make the final stop of an enormous downwinder, along as much of the coastline as you can manage! A back-up team is always provided for these. From Sao Luis you fly away from Maranhao, usually to Sao Paulo, Rio or Brasilia to connect homewards from one of those cities, or we can combine your Atins Kite-Surf Tour with any other destination in Brazil.
